Buy Fresh Buy Local St. Croix River Valley

BFBL LogoIn 2007, Land Stewardship Project formed the St. Croix River Valley Buy Fresh Buy Local (BFBL) chapter and launched a campaign to promote local foods and a community based food system.  The chapter’s steering committee designed the colorful St. Croix River Valley BFBL label, established a partnership program, and developed campaign strategies.  Since then, the campaign has gained momentum through the partnership of over 60 farmers, businesses, farmers’ markets, organizations and consumers.

The St. Croix River Valley Buy Fresh Buy Local campaign has four main goals:

  • Farmers' Marketto expand local markets for local growers;
  • to increase the consumption of fresh, healthful food in the St. Croix River Valley;
  • to diversify the region’s economic base;
  • to protect ecological and scenic resources in the region by reconnecting food systems with ecosystems.

To work towards accomplishing these goals, the St. Croix River Valley Buy Fresh Buy Local chapter has:

  • held winter meetings for farmers in five Valley towns to introduce the Buy Fresh Buy Local campaign to area farmers and learn about their marketing concerns;
  • publicized the BFBL campaign and its events in newspapers and in newsletters of collaborating organizations;
  • organized the Dine Fresh Dine Local event, a one-day culinary celebration of local foods at restaurants throughout the Valley;
  • co-sponsored a farmer/buyer workshop to connect local farmers to potential restaurant buyers;
  • publicized the times and locations of the region’s 26 farmers’ markets on the LSP website;
  • arranged for a National Park Service Ranger to visit four of the Valley’s farmers’ markets and talk to children about the natural resources of the St. Croix River;
  • conducted workshops and presented exhibits at a variety of conferences and events in the region.
