PDF document. CSA VIDEO: Ever wonder what it's like to belong to a CSA farm? Check out this new three-minute video by Larry Schmidt and Katy Podolinsky: Community Supported Agriculture: What to expect when you join a farm. What
is Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)? What
does CSA membership involve? Although each CSA farm makes its own arrangements with its members and has its own expectations of them, being involved with a CSA operation always means sharing the rewards as well as the risks of farming. The rewards include: enjoying the freshest produce available, often harvested the same day you receive it; knowing where, how and by whom your food is being produced; having a direct connection with the people who produce your food; and supporting the kind of stewardship that is good for the land as well as its people. The risks include weather and pests. Though formidable for small, self-sustaining farmers, these risks are bearable when shared by a group of subscribers. By linking together through CSA operations, farmers and consumers alike can benefit from an agriculture that provides beautiful and bountiful food while preserving the ecological and social basis necessary for coming generations to be so blessed. The
Farms in this Directory But it has become clear in recent years that the CSA model is no longer exclusive to the metro area. Numerous farmers have determined they do not need to deliver their products to the Twin Cities to remain viable, and have found a supportive market closer to home. That’s why the publication of the 2011 CSA Directory marks the first time that LSP is featuring not only farms that deliver to the Twin Cities, but also operations that deliver only in outstate Minnesota and western Wisconsin. The farms delivering to the Twin Cities are listed on pages 6-68. The farms delivering to outstate Minnesota and western Wisconsin are on pages 70-85. The farms listed in this directory have paid a fee to the Land Stewardship Project to be included. The Land Stewardship Project is not a certification agency for Community Supported Agriculture farms and does not guarantee customer satisfaction. Please keep in mind that while membership in a CSA farm means sharing in the bounty of the season, it also means sharing in the risks. At times, raising food in the Upper Midwest can be made quite challenging by inclement weather, pest infestations and other factors beyond the farmers’ control. We encourage you to contact the farms directly and ask questions to determine what best fits with your needs, lifestyle and schedule. We recommend reading the “Selecting a CSA” and “Questions to Ask the Farmers” guides on pages 3 and 4 before beginning your search for a CSA operation that fits you best. Good luck as you take that first step into an exciting sector of our food system! Selecting
a CSA
*Ideas and wording used for this list taken from MACSAC, the Madison Area Community Supported Agriculture Coalition. Questions to Ask a CSA Farmer Below are a few questions that should be asked of any farmer you are considering entering into a CSA relationship with. Potential CSA members should not be shy about asking such questions — and a good CSA farmer should be forthcoming with answers. After all, this is about creating a trusting relationship built on good food, good stewardship and good friendships.
A Quick CSA Guide To purchase a share of fresh food for the season, contact any of the following farms directly. Click on a link for more information about that farm. *FARMS SOLD OUT OF SHARES FOR THE SEASON ARE NOTED BELOW

River Farms CSA Our 18-week season runs mid-June through mid-October. Your membership gets you a weekly box of the season’s finest, delivered to neighborhood sites across the greater metro area. The veggies we pack into your box each week will vary with the rhythms of the growing season. This means that in the early boxes you might see snap peas, broccoli, scallions and greens (among others). The heat of the summer will bring along garden favorites like tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, potatoes, summer squash and more. As we wind into fall, look for different varieties of winter squash, lots of roots and greens. We also participate in a program called Harvest for the Hungry, which works with regional farms to get fresh produce into local food pantries. Donations are matched 100%, and the money is used to purchase food from our farmers-in-training for the food pantries. Donations to either MFA or Harvest for the Hungry can always be added onto share prices. Please call or visit www.mnfoodassociation.org for more information on farm tours, CSA share details/sign-up, and MFA workshops/events. Big Woods Farm A full share includes 18 weekly distributions (8-30 pounds, depending on time of the season) of produce, available beginning in mid-June, at four locations: at the farm on Mondays, at Just Food Co-op in Northfield on Mondays or Thursdays, at Valley Natural Foods in Burnsville on Thursdays and in South Minneapolis near Lake Nokomis on Thursdays. Two festivals are held each season: a height-of-the-summer garlic and vegetable cookout, and a fall pumpkin and winter squash harvest potluck. At the latter, members help pick the squash and pumpkins, and take home a cache for the winter plus jack-o-lanterns for the doorstep. Members are welcome to visit the farm most anytime to work up a sweat in the garden or to simply wander about, enjoying the countryside. The chance to pick-your-own flowers, cherry tomatoes, basil and green beans, available as the summer progresses, is included with your share. Bike Farm Located in the beautiful rolling countryside of Cushing, Wis., our delivery area includes the St. Croix River Valley and Twin Cities metro area. This season we will be offering CSA shares in two different size boxes. A full share (3/4 bushel box) consists of 7-12 varieties of vegetables; while a half share (5/9 bushel box) will contain 5-9 varieties. We have approximately 50 shares available, with a limited number of half-shares. Several delivery options are available. We offer delivery to your doorstep (via the amazing bicycle, where applicable), group drop-sites (three or more boxes to a single location), or on-farm pick-up. Price breaks will be given to boxes dropped to group sites or picked up on the farm. Our season spans 18 weeks with vegetables delivered every Thursday from mid-June until early October. A weekly newsletter will accompany each box with farm news, photos and recipes. It’s been our experience that the most important part of the CSA model is the “C.” Community is what sets this apart from other consumer/producer relationships. We want you to come out to the farm and see where your food is grown and meet the people that grow it. We look forward to bringing our work to your table. Bistro Farm In addition to your share box, our drop-sites are full of self-serve baskets of fresh herbs and salad greens. Special deliveries in-season may include fresh flowers, a week of the finest sweet corn and the fall harvest box. Deliveries begin in June and run every Thursday for approximately 14 weeks. We serve the Uptown Minneapolis and St. Paul areas with easily accessible and centrally located drop sites. Please visit us at www.thebistrofarm.com for more information. Blackberry

Our farm has been in Josh’s family for four generations. It was a working dairy farm until the 1980s, and we’re working hard to revitalize the farm and raise a family by growing vegetables and livestock sustainably. We have a passion for building restoration and re-use, and many of our farm buildings have been moved in or re-built from salvaged materials. Our farm is 40 acres, including wooded ravines, pasture, fields and the farm-site. We have a deep appreciation for the natural world and ecology, which is why we have chosen organic certification. Most of our fields were certified organic in 2009, with an additional 1.5 acres in transition until 2012. The soil is alive, and it is our responsibility to maintain that life, ultimately helping us grow nutritious and healthy crops. Pick-up sites are in Minneapolis, Henderson, the St. Peter Food Co-op and at the Farm.
Full and half shares are available—both are delivered weekly. Deliveries start the second week in June and continue for 18 weeks through the second week in October. Delivery sites: Fresh and Natural Foods in Hudson, River Market Co-op in downtown Stillwater and Hampden Park Co-op in St. Paul (928 Raymond Ave.). Each share includes 30 to 40 varieties of vegetables, a small selection of herbs and Eener’s ultra-hip weekly newsletter The Spinning Turnip. Eener grows pretty much all the classic garden veggies plus a few oddities. As an added bonus, full share members sporadically receive Eener’s free-range chicken eggs. Lamb, goat, pork or beef meat may be available for sale in the fall. Everything grown on Eener’s Farm is done so in a sustainable manner without the use of chemical herbicides, pesticides or fertilizers. Please see Eener’s website for share rates, more CSA details and whacky farm antics. Members are not required to work on the farm. They are welcome to visit and encouraged to attend the Big Fall Harvest Party Fest, which is held at the farm in October and involves a bonfire, food, farm tours, hay rides, pumpkins and wildlife fun. Fazenda Boa Terra Our years of experience have taught us that one of the greatest responsibilities a farmer can take on is to become a CSA farmer. With this immense devotion in mind, we strive relentlessly to provide our members with astounding shares brimming with food that is all manner of flavor, color, size, shape and texture week-after-week. With 90 varieties of vegetables, we hope to surprise you week-after-week with something new and exciting. With any luck you will be overloaded, leaving lots of extras behind that we can donate to those in need. If you want it all, that’s okay too—just don’t forget to help yourself to some fresh cut flowers and herbs from your u-pick garden when you pick up at the farm. For more information, please visit www.fazendaboaterra.com and learn all about who we are and where to find us this spring. We hope you will join us for 20 Friday festivals of food, June through October, when you get your weekly due of Fazenda Boa Terra in a box. • Products: We grow 90 varieties of vegetables plus u-pick flowers and herbs for CSA members. We offer an array of more than 40 vegetables; including leaf lettuce, salad mix, heirloom tomatoes, asparagus, broccoli, onions, peppers, carrots, peas, beans, potatoes and sweet corn. Chad Forsberg (owner) grew up south of Minneapolis and began growing vegetables there. It was an interest in self-sustenance and sustainability with a concern for world food security that propelled him into agriculture. It was in the Twin Cities where he began working with local chefs to provide them with the finest produce possible, searching out rare, unusual, beautiful heirloom vegetables of all kinds. Footjoy Farm produce is loved and used widely throughout the best restaurants in the cities, and it is this same produce that you will receive each week in your CSA share. Throughout the season there may be other treats that find their way into the shares when they are available, such as wild mushrooms, alpine yellow strawberries, raw honey, cuke nuts, dry beans or anything else delicious that may be grown or foraged. We have been planting a lot of various fruit trees, shrubs and vines. It is unclear Our focus is on the quality of each share and therefore the number of shares is limited. Enjoy! Fox & Fawn Farm In 2011, we will be growing 213 total varieties of 84 different crops — everything from acorn winter squash to zebra tomatoes. This year we will be adding 16 apple trees to our existing nine trees, 20 grape seedlings, 25 asparagus crowns and another 75 raspberry canes. Don’t worry—blueberries will be coming in 2012! All of our produce is available through our CSA program. CSA farms sell the bounty of the season’s harvest to interested shareholders who pay for their produce up front (when the ground is covered in snow drifts) in exchange for weekly shares of produce throughout the growing season (when the ground is covered in snow peas). Our CSA offers the bounty of the season for 18 weeks, garden-fresh recipes, stories of our triumphs and travails, and a connection to the food on your plate with farm visits and a harvest celebration in September. We deliver to Chanhassen, Chaska, Excelsior, Minneapolis (Bryn Mawr), Minnetonka, Mound, St. Paul (St. Anthony Park) Victoria, and Waconia. We offer full shares (3/4 bushel) and half shares (3/8 bushel). Deliveries start in mid-June and run until mid-October. Fall shares may also be available, weather permitting. Foxtail Farm
Foxtail Farm is located in the St. Croix River Valley south of Osceola, Wis., about 50 minutes northeast of the Twin Cities. For the 2011 growing season we have 300 memberships available. In addition, we include a little of the unusual. A weekly newsletter is also included. We also host a Kids’ Day and an annual Fall Harvest Festival. Boxes are delivered on Thursday afternoons in the northeast metro area, including much of St. Paul, Minneapolis and the St. Croix River Valley towns of Taylors Falls, Osceola, Marine on St. Croix and Stillwater. Former members have first option, and after Feb. 21 remaining shares will be available for new folks. Our season runs from approximately mid-June through mid-October and averages 19 weeks. Half shares are not available. We do not require our members to work but you are always welcome on the farm. A limited number of partial work-share memberships are available. Payment plans can be arranged. • Apprenticeship/Employment Opportunities • Freedom Farm This year we’re increasing our season extension with our new fifth high tunnel, expanding sales of our farm kitchen’s products — canned goods such as salsas, pickled veggies of all sorts, sauerkraut, and other lacto-fermentations. Also, we’re starting pastured hogs, upgrading our root cellar, rejuvenating the legacy vineyard, and prepping land for orchards and nut trees. We look forward to another great year. Commune with us at apple cider squeezing time. We belong to Buy Fresh Buy Local-St. Croix Valley and trained with the Minnesota Food Association and the Land Stewardship Project. We are a collective of immigrant family farmers with local international interests. Drop-off sites will be in Stillwater, St. Paul and on the farm. Fresh Earth Farms Nestled in the quiet, scenic Lower St. Croix River Valley just south of Afton, Fresh Earth Farms is just minutes from the hustle and bustle of the Twin Cities. We grow food close to our customers — just minutes from your table! At Fresh Earth Farms, we provide both deliveries to local drop-sites as well as pick-up at the farm. With on-farm pick-up, you choose the produce you take home with you. With drop-site pick-up, you have the convenience of receiving your produce close to your home. With either program you can choose either a CoupleShare — good for two people, or a FamilyShare — good for a family of three to four. We also have a solution for single person households. Our produce selection each year is both traditional and unusual. We provide food that is familiar and comfortable for most families. However, we also experiment with the unusual; we grow varieties that aren’t generally available in local stores or not typically grown here in Minnesota. At Fresh Earth Farms, you will find more than 20 varieties of tomatoes, seven varieties of potatoes and 10 varieties of garlic. Many varieties are heirlooms. We grow over 150 different fruits, vegetables and herbs. Be adventurous and try something new! In addition to our delicious vegetables, we also resell certified organic fruit; certified organic coffee; grass-fed beef, pork and chicken; and raw cheese from grass-fed cows — all from small, family farms, ranches and orchards! Gale Woods Farm The CSA operation at Gale Woods is unique because it involves teenage youth from the nearby suburbs and the cities in growing produce for the shares. In addition to learning about sustainable agriculture, they are given leadership-training opportunities and are inspired to create positive change in their home communities. Produce is also provided to needy families through the Mound West-Tonka foodshelf. Shareholders are encouraged to get involved with the farm for events such as maple syruping, lambing and calving in the spring, as well as assisting the youth farmers on workdays. The produce season runs from mid-June to early October. There are also egg and meat shares available. Shares are picked up at the farm. CSA pick-ups are at our farm a few miles west of Hutchinson, at our booth at the Mill City Farmers’ Market on Saturdays, at the Applehouse in Chanhassen, and at Harvest Moon Co-op in Long Lake. More information is available at our website: www.loonorganics.com. Marshwatch Farms Members pick up their shares at the farm’s walk-in cooler on the day they select. This is intended to eliminate rushing to meet time requirements. But more importantly, it is a way for members to connect with their “Personal Farmer” and to receive help with recipes, etc. Members also receive Chef Joe’s recipes, along with Terrie’s preserving and canning tips in the weekly newsletter, The Mews. There are periodic events planned for members to participate, including a class in canning. Members are invited to visit the farm and enjoy the educational opportunities, including the bluebird walk, a children’s garden, a butterfly garden, herb and sunflower gardens. CSA: Mid-June to October McKinley Community CSA Founded by concerned neighbors in 2010, last year we grew 32 crops in over 120 varieties. Our inaugural shareholders expressed an appreciation for the regular inclusion of familiar vegetables such as carrots and lettuce in their shares, as well as enthusiasm for new introductions to their tables like lemon cucumbers, pea shoots and kohlrabi. We farm to grow biodiversity in our soil and cropland. We do not use synthetic pesticides or fertilizers. Starting mid-June and ending in October, you will receive a three-quarter bushel box of seasonal vegetables once a week for an anticipated 17-week season, a newsletter with updates on the growing season and recipe ideas, and invitations to our end-of-the-season Harvest Supper and skill-building events, such as how to build a solar food dryer or cooking demonstrations. We envision a series of pocket-farms throughout the McKinley neighborhood that at peak production will serve over 600 households in the CSA model, enhancing and preserving open green space and dramatically improving the economic reality of our community. You can sign-up with us online at http://mckinleycommunity.csasignup.com/members. Mhonpaj’s Garden Farm

My Minnesota Farmer As your farmers, we strive to offer the best, freshest and most delicious produce around. We offer more than 30 different varieties of fruits and vegetables over an approximately 18-week CSA season, but our main focus is growing fruits and vegetables that most people know and enjoy. We also have weekly egg shares during the CSA Our farm is situated on 40 acres, 30 miles south of the Twin Cities metro area. Over the past six years we have been growing the farm piece-by-piece, each year growing more food on healthier soils. We are committed to growing our food free of chemicals in a natural and sustainable way and providing that food to you in its freshest, simplest form. We offer delivery to eight Twin Cities and outstate locations, or pick-up at the farm where you can bring home any “extras” we have been blessed with. We celebrate with three farm events, but welcome members anytime because we love to show you how we grow your food. Allow us the opportunity to become your farmer. Nitty Gritty Dirt Farm We are intentional about our chemical-free, sustainable farming practices, including maximizing soil health through green and animal manures, compost, mulch, cover crops and crop rotations. We also use pesticide-free pest management to naturally monitor, prevent and control insects and other pests, and maintain animal health and well-being through the use of loose housing and pasture rotations. We are also intentional about creating community and personal well-being through our connections with the land and its abundance — we invite you to share in that with us. Three farm festivals provide opportunities for visiting the farm to meet the farmers, as well as learn about chemical-free farming, good land stewardship and sustainable living. Other farm activities include workshops on farm crafts and music. • Apprenticeship/Employment Opportunities •
Philadelphia Community
Farm Families are encouraged to bring their children to work, learn and play in nature...as we have also been pioneers in the movement to address nature deficit disorder in children. Through biodynamic agriculture, we nurture the farm as a whole organism, building a regenerating circle of soil, plant, animal and human life. Located one-hour northeast of the Twin Cities on the St. Croix River, we serve the St. Croix Valley and Twin Cities. Members take turns driving to bring shares to the drop-sites. Delivery to your home or business by Simple Provisions (carter@simpleprovisions.com) can be arranged for an extra fee. Shares start in mid-June and go until Thanksgiving, and include over 40 types of vegetables and herbs as they come into season. Extra vegetables for preserving are included when available. A solar/geothermal greenhouse extends our season. We donate surplus to food shelves. Benefits: visiting the animals, exploring the 300+ acres of preserved forest, prairie, streams and waterfall. Festivals are held in June and September. Piney
Hill Farm This year we will offer 18- or 24-week full shares or a 9-week bi-weekly share. We have drop-sites in St. Paul near Hamline, Uptown (28th and Lyndale), South Minneapolis (near Xerxes and 50th), and locally in Wisconsin. Available as a separate add-on to your share is a Thanksgiving storage share. We emphasize variety and quality, including over 10 varieties of heirloom tomatoes, various types of greens and salad mixes, and a few new things each year to make it interesting. This year, we are strongly encouraging all members to come help on the farm during a scheduled work day, doing things like planting, harvesting garlic or onions, hoophouse construction, weeding, etc. We look forward to building the “community” that should be part of a “community-supported” farm. An Autumn Hootenany with live band, cider pressing and pumpkin harvest will take place in late September. We are constantly adapting our growing practices to be as sustainable as possible and use no chemical inputs...because vegetables are supposed to be good for you! Please e-mail us at pineyhillfarm@gmail.com for a brochure and a full list of produce we grow. Ploughshare
Farm Ploughshare Farm was founded in 1998 and has been operating as a CSA since 2002. We have adequate infrastructure — including proper irrigation, washing facilities and cultivation equipment — to operate our size farm properly. That being said, our operation is still young enough that we are not “set in our ways.” We are continuously asking ourselves how we can do things better. Weekly deliveries to our CSA members include an array of garden staples, gourmet and specialty crops. As a family of six ourselves (four young boys under the age of 14), we keep in mind what families want to eat. In order to assist families with the basics of eating “in-season” vegetables, we offer interactive web resources, weekly e-newsletters, recipes and cookbooks. We have opportunities for members to participate in a “hands-on experience” during our Fall Festival and our June Pea Pick. We deliver weekly over a period from early-June to late September for our regular summer shares. In addition, we offer fall storage shares and winter frozen shares delivered October through March. We have drop-sites at central locations in Minneapolis, Minnetonka, New Hope, Rogers, St. Paul, St. Cloud, Fergus Falls and Alexandria. If you are interested in hosting a drop-site, we offer great incentives. Prairie Sun Farm We provide sustainably grown vegetables June through October (18 weeks) in both half share and full share sizes. Each 3/4 bushel box contains many varieties of vegetables, including a few you probably haven’t tried before — all organically grown and picked at their peak for freshness. A weekly newsletter will keep you informed of what’s going on at the farm and provide tasty recipes to try. The farm, which was primarily corn and soybeans before we purchased it, sits on 40 acres with wetlands and prairie surrounding it. During the last 5 years we have been transitioning it from a conventional, monoculture farm into a diversified, productive landscape. Cover crops are used to enhance the soil and provide weed control, and 10 acres of prairie provide opportunity for wildlife and beneficial insects. The weekly or bi-weekly shares will be available for pick-up in downtown Chaska at Dolce Vita Wine Shop on Wednesdays, or at the farm on Thursdays. Come join us and share in the rewards of healthy eating. Call, e-mail us or visit our website at www.prairiesunfarm.com for more information. Riverbend

Our 18-week delivery season will provide you with a diverse array of delicious, fresh-from-the-fields, seasonal produce. We also grow many heirloom varieties to ensure that your meal-plan will never lack in color, flavor or an abundance of choices. In addition, we offer extra produce (at an additional cost) for families interested in canning, freezing, etc., to ensure that their diet is as local as possible year-round. SEEDS Farm To accomplish these goals, we strive to integrate our farm into the surrounding community by participating in the Riverwalk Farmers' Market, working with the Community Action Center food shelf, providing internship opportunities to college and high school students, and supplying fresh produce to local schools through the Farm-to-School program. At our farm, we offer four ways to get involved. The first is both full- and half-share CSA memberships. We partner our CSA with a Junior Farmer Program to get children excited and involved with the outdoors through hands-on activities. GRG employs sustainable methods of crop production through the use of composts, manure, mulches, green manures, cover crops, crop rotations and minimal use of pesticides. Many varieties of produce are grown that have better flavor and/or nutrient value than those most commonly available. All GRG CSA members are welcome to come tour the farm at any time throughout the season and we have a fall festival/harvest celebration on the farm in September for all members. GRG CSA shares will include the following crops, in-season: asparagus, beans, beets, blueberries, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cantaloupe, carrots, cauliflower, cucumbers, currants, herbs, gooseberries, kohlrabi, lettuce, onions, peas, peppers, potatoes, pumpkins, radishes, raspberries, rhubarb, spinach, squash, strawberries, sweet corn, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, watermelon and zucchini. Kitchen tested recipes are included each week to help utilize those products you may not be familiar with.
We grow and sell our fresh-picked fruits and vegetables, berries, herbs, eggs, honey and cut flowers at area farmers’ markets, as well as through our CSA program. Depending on weather, weekly deliveries start mid-June and run through mid-October. First boxes are packed with cool season crops like salads, snow peas, spinach, asparagus and strawberries. As the season progresses, standards like tomatoes, cucumbers, beans and zucchini will be offered abundantly. Also available are shell beans, winter squash, potatoes (six different varieties), carrots and parsnips, which can be stored throughout the early winter. When the season allows for abundance, we will provide it. Our selection is both traditional and unusual. We grow vegetables that are familiar to most customers. However, we like to try and experiment with the unusual—some of our vegetables are not readily available in local stores. Egg shares are available year-round. We offer full shares (3/4 bushel) packed every week for 16 weeks. Half shares are one full share packed every-other-week for eight weeks. Drop-sites: farmers’ markets in Marshall on Saturdays, Tuesdays in Madison, Thursdays in Dawson. • Apprenticeship/Employment Opportunities • Keppers’ Pottery & Produce Two of us operate the farm — small enough for detail, but large enough to meet demand reliably. For 15 years we have provided generously packed boxes of vegetables. We have never missed a delivery. All the produce you receive was grown by us on our farm. We offer variety, but emphasize the familiar. So that you receive the freshest vegetables possible at peak nutrition, we practice same-day harvest. There are no large refrigeration storage units on our farm. We harvest, rinse and deliver to you. Each year the farm hosts a garden tour, spring and fall events. Members are welcome when visits are arranged in advance. You choose on which weeks of our 35-week harvest schedule you want vegetables — we give you our harvest schedule and you choose the number of weeks you get vegetables. This allows you maximum flexibility to meet your schedule needs. Our passion and commitment to building healthy soil translate to superior nutrition and flavor for all we serve.

We offer three share sizes:
Members receive a weekly e-newsletter with garden reports, recipes featuring the upcoming week’s harvest, fun facts about unusual varieties and anecdotes about Midheaven Farm life. When we have more of a veggie crop than we can pack into the share boxes, members can pick-their-own for free. New in 2011—Egg Share. Chicks bought last October will start laying this spring. They’ll range in the garden with protection from predators. Their grain ration is homegrown biodynamic wheat, oats and barley, with supplemental organic soybean meal.
As a family with small children, we pay close attention to the health of our soils and ourselves, never utilizing chemical fertilizers or pesticides. Our CSA season runs for 16 weeks from Mid-June to Mid-October, and we offer both full every-week shares and every-other-week shares. Besides produce, members can also arrange for Organic Valley dairy from “the world’s smallest dairy route,” and purchase whole chickens we raise on pasture. We deliver directly to your home or business in our local area between Pelican Rapids and Detroit Lakes on Friday afternoons.
Our CSA runs for 18 weeks from mid-June through mid-October. We offer both full and half shares. Half shares are a full box of produce delivered every-other-week throughout the season. Delivery sites are at the St. Peter Food Co-op and on Good Council Drive in Mankato. We also have pick-up at the farm. We offer a wide selection of vegetables, herbs and fruit. We grow all of the standard vegetables like juicy tomatoes, crisp lettuce and carrots, and tender broccoli to name a few, but we also grow a few of the under-utilized veggies like tomatillos and rutabagas. In our weekly newsletter, we give tips and recipes for that week's produce. In the end, the CSA members ultimately decide what we grow with their feedback. We have worked hard to grow what our customers want and in quantities that are useful to them. We also offer tomato preserving shares and a fall share. We hope that you will join us in celebrating how good food can be when it is grown with a love of the soil and eaten with a mind towards the idea that food connects us all.
During the season you will find over 40 different vegetables, fruits and herbs in your share. We delight in bringing our members several varieties of different crops such as tomatoes, peas, carrots and potatoes, including many heirloom varieties. We sell full and half shares, delivering on Monday or Thursday to drop of locations in the Bemidji area. The vegetable garden only takes up about four acres of our 160- acre farm. A quarter of the farm is maintained as wildlands, including a tamarack swamp, floating sedge bog and hardwood forest. On the rest we raise highland cattle for beef (and fertilizer!), bees for honey and heritage chickens for eggs and meat. Beef, honey, eggs and chicken can be purchased as additions to our shares.
In 2004, Leah Nesbitt and her husband Sam Miller started working at Nesbitt’s full time, and in 2005 we opened a retail space in which we provide locally produced and sourced products. In addition to the multitude of our own Food Alliance certified apples, produce (we started our CSA in 2009) and fresh pressed cider, we offer syrup, honey (harvested from our backyard) Fair-Trade and organic coffee, homemade ice cream, local art and music. We also offer breakfast, lunch and pastries in our new café, Oasis Eatery. Purchasing a share allows you to enjoy one 10-15 lb box of produce each week of our growing season. We start around the first week of July and finish toward the end of September—approximately 12 weeks. In addition to our “bread and butter” produce, we include herbs, squash, sugar pumpkins, apples and fresh-pressed cider in our CSA! If something were to happen during the growing season — weather, hail damage, etc.—you would be reimbursed accordingly. If you received produce for 25% of the season you would be reimbursed 75% of your share crop, or if you received 50% of your produce we would give back 50% of your share crop, so on, and so forth. Each box of produce will include recipes, and a wonderful resource for recipes! If a share seems too much for you, feel free to split the box. We contact you one week before the produce is ready.
As both teachers and farmers, we have always enjoyed the opportunity to work outside with the rhythm of the seasons. After nine seasons of combined experience interning, volunteering and managing at different farms, we began our own farm business in 2010. In 2011, we will be offering full and half CSA shares from June through October. Full shares consist of a ¾ bushel box of produce every week for 18 weeks and half shares consist of a ¾ bushel box every-other-week for 18 weeks. We raise many of the most popular vegetable and herb crops, along with a few heirloom varieties for flavor and a change of pace in your kitchen. Each share box includes a newsletter with delicious recipes that will get you excited for turning your share box into tasty meals and snacks for your family. First and foremost, we strive to provide you with fresh, chemical-free produce that looks great and tastes delicious. We prewash your produce and most of your produce is harvested fresh on the day we deliver to you. We are in the process of transitioning our land to be certified organic. As a shareholder, you’ll receive a weekly e-newsletter that includes history about the veggies you receive each week, as well as recipes, news from the farm and a projection of the following week’s share contents. Shares include an assortment of tasty, sustainably grown vegetables, herbs and melons as they mature throughout an 18-week season. Occasional flower bouquets are also included. Share size will vary throughout the season, based upon crop yields and seasonality (they’ll be heavier and with greater selection as the season progresses). A full share should provide for the vegetable needs of a family of four (two adults/two children), or a vegetarian couple. Half shares include roughly the same assortment, but less of each item. This season we have decided to discontinue selling at local farmers’ markets in order to focus more fully upon and expand the CSA. We are now offering share pick-up in Albert Lea and Owatonna, in addition to our previous pick-up location options of Waseca or here at the farm. Please contact us to inquire about becoming a shareholder for the 2011 season.
In 2011, we are offering a Summer Veggie Share, an Egg Share and a Winter Veggie Share. We also raise pastured pork, free-range chicken, and honey for folks to buy à la carte. Our CSA shares are available for pickup Monday or Friday afternoons on our farm. Each member will take home their products in handmade, reusable “farm bags.” Full and 1⁄2 shares available for Veggie Shares. The Summer Veggie Share runs for about 20 weeks, from early June to the end of October. It includes all the favorites—greens, broccoli, green beans, carrots, summer squash, cabbage, tomatoes, melons, corn, eggplant, peppers, winter squash, onions, potatoes and more. In addition, members can u-pick flowers and herbs each week. Each week, Egg Share members will receive a dozen eggs from our heritage breed chickens. Our Winter Veggie Share will have four pick-ups—one each in November, December, January and February. Throughout the course of the winter, members will receive salad greens, carrots, beets, onions, dry beans, potatoes, squash and cabbage, as well as a variety of frozen vegetables—everything from green beans to corn and eggplant to broccoli. We strive to create a community-centered farm, and we love visitors! Come by any time. We offer classes in partnership with local organizations, and we are hoping to increase the scope of our classes and create some youth programming for next season.
