1) LSP FAMILY FARM BREAKFAST FEB. 6

LSP will be holding its second annual Family Farm Breakfast near the Minnesota Capitol Tuesday, Feb. 6. The breakfast will be from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. at Christ Lutheran Church, 105 University Ave. W., Saint Paul. The cost is $8, which can be paid at the door. Invite your legislator to this event early; it will be a great opportunity to introduce lawmakers to LSP's work while enjoying a great meal. 2) DAVE SERFLING FUND FOR SUSTAINABLE AG EDUCATION

LSP is now accepting applications for the Dave Serfling Memorial Fund for Sustainable Agriculture Education. Dave Serfling was a southeast Minnesota farmer and sustainable agriculture leader who, at the age of 46, was killed in an automobile accident on Jan. 8, 2006. The fund's money is available to participants in and graduates of LSP's Farm Beginnings program. The fund can be used to cover the cost of enrolling in the Farm Beginnings course, as well as for continuing education opportunities, such as classes, workshops and conferences. 3) 'ABC'S OF ORGANIC CERTIFICATION' JAN. 23

LSP is co-sponsoring a workshop called "The ABC's of Organic Certification" Tuesday, Jan. 23, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Plainview (Minn.) Area Community Center, 346 West Broadway. 4) VALUE-ADDED CONFERENCE JAN. 26-27

5) WISCONSIN GRAZING CONFERENCE FEB. 2-3

LSP member Andy Hart will give a presentation on aerial interseeding of crops during the 2007 meeting of the Southeast Chapter of the Sustainable Farming Association of Minnesota, Saturday, Feb. 3, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the St. Charles (Minn.) 7) WETLANDS SUMMIT FEB. 3

LSP is helping put on the 2nd Annual Wetlands Summit Feb. 3, from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., at Normandale Community College in Bloomington, Minn. 8) FOOD ALLIANCE ANNUAL MEETING FEB. 8

"How Brands Can Leverage 'Sustainable Agriculture' in the Marketplace" is the theme of the Food Alliance Midwest's Annual Meeting on Thursday, Feb. 8, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Radisson Hotel in Roseville, Minn. These annual meetings are a chance for Food Alliance (http://www.landstewardshipproject.org/programs_mwfa.html) producers to get together with retailers, distributors and food service management company representatives to discuss how this sustainable seal can support land stewardship and healthy foods. 9) ORGANIC DAIRY FIELD DAY FEB. 13

LSP is helping put on a field day on sustainable organic dairy farming at West Central Research and Outreach Center in Morris on Tuesday, Feb. 13, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.  Information on low-cost winter housing and feeding options, maintaining herd health without antibiotics, and local resources will be presented. 10) STEWARDSHIP & JUSTICE TALK FEB. 14

LSP's Mark Schultz will participate in a panel discussion called, "Towards Stewardship & Justice: Needed Reforms in U.S. Farm Policy," from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., at St. Martin's Table, 2001 Riverside Ave., Minneapolis. 11) HOG RAFFLE DRAWINGS FEB. 15

LSP's western Minnesota office is selling raffle tickets for two half hogs from Pastures A' Plenty farm. There will be two separate drawings for the meat. A ticket can be purchased for a $10 donation. The drawings will be Thursday, Feb. 15, at 8 p.m. during LSP's membership Appreciation Meeting at the Montevideo (Minn.) Community Center. 13) FARM BEGINNINGS PRESENTATION AT SFA STATE MEETING FEB. 17

15) FOOD ALLIANCE AT 'FOOD & WINE' FEB. 23-25

During the 2007 Twin Cities Food and Wine Experience, Food Alliance Midwest will be putting on a "mini" Minnesota Cooks event, with 12 chefs cooking up local foods over three days. The Food and Wine Experience is Feb. 23-25 at the Minneapolis Convention Center. For details, see http://www.foodwineshow.com.

16) GOAT FARM TOUR IN SPANISH FEB. 24

A farm tour and workshop on goat production will be held at Dry Weather Creek near Milan, Minn., on Saturday, Feb. 24, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This event, which is sponsored by LSP's Farm Beginnings program, is targeted at Latino/a families interested in raising goats, and the presentations will be given in Spanish. The tour/workshop is free of charge and lunch will be provided. Space is limited, and transportation may be available upon request. 17) COLLIN PETERSON PRESENTS 'HOMEGROWN ECONOMY' CONF. FEB. 26

U.S. Rep. Collin Peterson is sponsoring a conference called "Homegrown Economy: Foods From Local Farms as Economic Development" at the University of Minnesota-Morris on Monday, Feb. 26, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. LSP is helping put on this conference. 18) SAC MEETING MARCH 6-8

The Sustainable Agriculture Coalition (SAC), a group to which LSP belongs, will present "Roots to Reform: Education and Advocacy for the 2007 Farm Bill," March 6-8, in Silver Spring, Md. This will be an opportunity for sustainable agriculture farmers and advocates from around the country to learn about and practice organizing and advocacy that starts from the ground up. 19) LOCAL FOOD FORUM & EXPO MARCH 9 IN WINONA

LSP and Winona County's Economic Development Authority are co-organizing the 2nd annual Local Food Forum & Expo on Friday, March 9, in Winona, Minn. This year speakers will focus on the intersection between regional food and institutions, especially health care and education. Key presenters include the Iowa farmers who run GROWN Locally (http://www.grownlocally.com) and Jamie Harvie of Health Care Without Harm (http://www.noharm.org). 20) SEWARD CO-OP CSA FAIR APRIL 21

The Seward Co-op will hold a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) Fair on April 21 at 2111 East Franklin Street in Minneapolis. This is a great opportunity to meet CSA farmers and learn more about this model of agriculture. For more information, see http://www.seward.coop or call 612-338-2465.

22) ALTERNATIVE HOG PRODUCTION ROUND-TABLES

Round-table discussions of sustainable, low input hog production and marketing systems are being held around Minnesota in the next several weeks:

-ROCHESTER -- January 23, from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., room HA134 of the Heinz Center, Rochester Community and Technical College.  The discussion will be led by hog farmer Jim VanDerPol and Yuzhi Li of the Alternative Swine Research Center at the University of Minnesota-Morris.

-MONTEVIDEO -- Jan. 31, from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., Java River Coffee Shop. This discussion will feature hog farmer Eric Klein and Yuzhi Li.

-WORTHINGTON -- Feb. 7, from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., Farmers Room of the Nobles County Courthouse. This discussion will feature hog farmer Steve Stassen and Yuzhi Li.

- REDWOOD FALLS -- Feb. 10, from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., Pizza Ranch. This discussion will feature hog farmer Justin Leonhardt and Yuzhi Li.

24) FOOD & FARM FEST INTERN NEEDED

LSP and the Minnesota Food Association, with support from Minnesota Grown, will co-sponsor an expanded Community Food and Farm Festival (http://www.landstewardshipproject.org/cfff/cfff.html) at the 2007 Living Green Expo May 5-6 at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds. The sponsors seek an intern to be the coordinator. Responsibilities include corresponding with farmer exhibitors and managing applications, developing plans for the event with sponsoring agencies and coordinating activities on both days of the festival. 25) LSP A GREEN PATCH RECIPIENT AT LINDEN HILLS

LSP has been selected as one of the 2007 recipient organizations for Linden Hills Co-op's Green Patch donation program. When co-op shoppers bring reusable cloth bags from home to carry out their groceries, they receive a "Green Patch," which is worth a nickel. Shoppers can save up 20 patches and get $1, or drop their patch in a donation box. Linden Hills (http://www.lindenhills.coop) is at 2813 West 43rd Street in Minneapolis.

26) AUGUST EARTH CSA NEEDS INTERNS

August Earth Farm (http://www.augustearth.com) near Hutchinson, Minn., is looking for interns for its 2007 season. A monthly stipend, along with produce that is in-season at the farm, will be offered, as well as housing. 27) GALE WOODS NEEDS CSA ASSISTANT

Gale Woods Farm (http://www.galewoodsfarm.org) in Minnetrista, Minn., is looking for a CSA Assistant to work at the farm's Community Supported Agriculture garden this season. The assistant will work with all aspects of running a 50-share CSA: greenhouse work, planting, cultivating, harvesting and preparing produce for market. This is a paid position.
