CANTON, Minn.—Setting up a low-cost milking parlor on a rotational grazing operation will be the subject of a special Farm Beginnings™ tour Saturday, June 3, beginning at noon, on the Bonnie and Vance Haugen farm near Canton. This tour, which is sponsored by the Land Stewardship Project’s Farm Beginnings™ program, is free to Farm Beginnings™ class participants,
$5 for Land Stewardship Project members and $10 for members of the general public. For more information and to register, contact Karen Stettler in the Land Stewardship Project’s Lewiston, Minn., office at 507-523-3366 or stettler@landstewardshipproject.org.
The Haugens bought their farm in 1993, and started their rotational grazing operation from scratch. Vance works as a county Extension educator in Wisconsin, and has helped numerous farmers set up low-cost parlors. Bonnie writes and speaks extensively about dairy grazing. Following the Haugen farm tour, this educational event will feature tours of three southwest Wisconsin operations utilizing
low-cost parlors. Participants in the tours will need to provide their own transportation to the Wisconsin farms; the Haugens will lead a car caravan to the operations.
For the past nine years, the Land Stewardship Project’s Farm Beginnings™ program has provided instruction on low-cost, profitable farming methods. The course combines classroom work with on-farm educational experiences. For more information, visit www.farmbeginnings.org.
