1/23/08
WINONA, Minn. — A two-part "Farming into the Next Generation" workshop will be held Feb. 8-9 and March 14-15 in Winona. This Land Stewardship Project (LSP) workshop will help farm families plan for eventually passing on a farm business to a related or non-related beginning farmer. For more information or to register, call Karen Stettler in LSP’s Lewiston office at 507-523-3366, or e-mail stettler@landstewardshipproject.org.

The “Farming Into the Next Generation” workshop is for beginning and established farmers thinking about or currently entering into a relationship involving an inter-generational farm business. Through this seminar, participants will discover how to address major issues that can lead to failure in an intergenerational farm business and will find out whether an existing operation has the capacity to support an additional partner. They will also learn about estate planning tools and alternatives for transfer of farm assets. At the end of the March session, families will have completed the framework of a working succession plan.

The workshop is open to all farm families who want to learn more about planning for farm succession, and it will have the greatest impact when both generations attend. Families are expected to participate in both sessions.

The registration fee for this four-day program is $150 per farming unit (up to four people per farm). This covers materials, meeting room costs, refreshment breaks and lunches. If you have more than four people in your farming unit, $50 will be charged for each additional participant.

This workshop is partially funded by the USDA’s Risk Management Agency and a North Central Region Risk Management Education Center grant. For information on other resources LSP offers beginning farmers, see www.farmbeginnings.org.
