CONTACT:Terry VanDerPol, LSP, 320-269-2105

3/7/08
MILAN, Minn
.—A meeting for farmers and commercial food buyers will be held Tuesday, March 18, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., at the Milan School Building, 408 N. 4th Street in Milan.  This Land Stewardship Project (LSP) meeting will provide information to farmers and retail and institutional food purchasers in an attempt to expand and establish marketing relationships between local, sustainable family farms and restaurants, cafes, grocery stores and institutions. For more information, call LSP’s Montevideo office at 320-269-2105, or e-mail ttaylor@landstewardshipproject.org.

“We’re hoping to build the local food system in this region by helping farmers and purchasers connect and learn how to work with each other successfully,” said Tom Taylor, an organizer for LSP’s Community Based Food Systems Program.

Chris Serio, Executive Chef of Sodexho Food Service Management at the University of Minnesota-Morris, will speak about working with local farmers and offer suggestions on the best way to market to institutions. Sodexho Campus Services in Morris has been a leader in sourcing and serving local foods to students and staff at the University. Bev and Don Struxness of Milan’s Double D Natural Meats will also be presenting their insights and “lessons learned” on marketing their beef to area retail outlets and to institutions.

This meeting is free and open to all interested. A light supper will be served, so those attending should call 320-269-2105 to sign up and ensure sufficient food. A free-will offering will be taken to cover the cost of the meal.
