MONTEVIDEO, Minn. As our struggling economy tests the resiliency of our communities, even the basic task of putting nutritious food on one’s table is challenging many families. But there are opportunities for turning this hardship into hope. A forum that explores the opportunities and issues for rural communities during these hard economic times will be held Monday, April 27, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Salem Lutheran Church, 631 N. 7th St., in Montevideo. There is no charge for this event.  For more information call Tom Taylor in the Land Stewardship Project’s Montevideo office at 320-269-2105.

This community forum will start with a light meal and a resource fair featuring information on nutrition and food assistance programs, along with efforts to support the development of a sustainable local food system. The keynote speaker will be Brother David Andrews, a Kellogg Foundation Food and Farming Fellow and formerly the Executive Director of the National Catholic Rural Life Conference. Brother David will talk about how emerging community based food systems can help provide good, nutritious food for everyone in our community.

Perri Graham of Church World Service, Vicki Poier with Friends of the Montevideo Area CROP Walk, and educator Allison Hutchens will also give an update on global and local hunger issues.

The evening will culminate with two presentations on local solutions to food access challenges in rural communities. The presentations will be given by Lisa Coons, Director of the Center for Earth Spirituality and Rural Ministry at Good Counsel in Mankato, Minn., and Audrey Arner from Moonstone Farm of Montevideo.

This event is sponsored by the Land Stewardship Project, Friends of the Montevideo Area CROP Walk, Church World Service, University of Minnesota Extension Health and Nutrition Educators, Salem Lutheran Church and Prairie Five Community Council INC.
