St. Croix Valley Farmers’ Markets to Host National Scenic Riverway Park Rangers in August

What is the connection between local food and beautiful scenery? National Park Service Rangers from the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway will set up educational exhibits among the vendors at the various farmers' markets in the St. Croix River Valley during August. The rangers are visiting the markets to talk to the public about the scenic and recreational assets of the St. Croix River and explain how citizens can help protect its water quality and beauty by, among other things, supporting a sustainable, local food system.

“A river is a reflection of the landscape from which its waters flow,” said park ranger Dale Cox. “One of the great benefits of purchasing locally grown foods is the knowledge that you are supporting a cleaner St. Croix River. Local farms are usually smaller and tend to take a less chemically-intensive approach to agriculture. We hope that our attendance at farmers’ markets helps the public better understand this connection and further enhances the relationship between the park and communities that support these endeavors.”

The locations and dates for the National Park Service exhibits are:

  • Bayport, Minn. — Monday, Aug. 10, 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., at Perro Park (Highway 95 and 3rd Ave.).
  • Hudson, Wis. — Thursday, Aug. 13, from 7 a.m. to noon, at the Plaza 94 Shopping Center (I-94 and 17th St.).
  • St. Croix Falls, Wis. — Thursday, Aug. 13, from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., at the scenic overlook in downtown St. Croix Falls on Washington St.
  • Stillwater, Minn. — Saturday, Aug. 15, 7 a.m. to noon, at the corner of 3rd St. and Pine St.
  • Eureka Center, Wis. — Friday, Aug. 21, from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., on State Road 87 (Eureka Center salt/sand building, across from KJ’s Eureka Bar).
  • Pine City, Minn. — Friday, Aug. 28, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Robinson Park on 3rd Ave. East in downtown Pine City.

The farmers’ market park ranger program is co-sponsored by the local St. Croix River Buy Fresh Buy Local® chapter and the farmers, businesses and farmers’ markets that are partners in its campaign to promote fresh, healthy, local foods as part of community economic development. The St. Croix chapter is one of 74 local Buy Fresh Buy Local chapters in the United States. One of its major goals is to educate the community about protecting the ecological and scenic resources of the St. Croix River Valley through the stewardship of sustainable farms.

Buy Fresh Buy Local urges consumers to shop for the freshest, most delicious local foods at farmers’ markets in the St. Croix River Valley.
