SAINT CLOUD, Minn. — Want to explore how improving your record keeping can improve your farm’s profitability? The Land Stewardship Project (LSP) is sponsoring a special “Record-Keeping on a Vegetable Farm” workshop Thursday, Mar. 18, from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., in Saint Cloud. The fee is $10 for LSP members and $45 for non-members. To reserve a spot, please pre-register by Mar. 8. To register or for more information, contact LSP’s Nick Olson at 320-269-2105 or nicko@landstewardshipproject.org.
Laura Frerichs of Loon Organics (www.loonorganics.com), a six-acre organic vegetable operation near Hutchinson, Minn., and Linda Halley of Gardens of Eagan (www.gardensofeagan.com), a 100-acre, urban-edge, organic vegetable farm, will give presentations on financial and production record keeping on their farms.
In addition, Jerry Hurrle of the USDA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA) will discuss how record keeping is essential for receiving financing through the FSA and what type of alternative records are needed in the application process. Christopher Barnier, an organic certifier with the Midwest Organic Services Association, will discuss the record keeping requirements for organic certification.
Participants in the March 18 workshop will be provided with the examples and templates needed to begin to develop a record keeping system relevant to their own farm situations. The workshop will offer practical examples and applications relevant to life on the modern vegetable farm.
This workshop is presented by LSP’s Farm Beginnings program, a farmer-led beginning farmer-training initiative. For more information on Farm Beginnings, visit www.farmbeginnings.org or call 320-269-2105.
