1-Act Play on Retiring Farmers’ Dilemma & the Future of Farmland in Osceola Sept. 12

CONTACT: Karen Stettler, 507-523-3366

8/5/11
OSCEOLA, Wis. — After a successful run in 12 southeast Minnesota communities last winter and spring, Look Who’s Knockin’, a one-act performance that explores the future of farmland ownership, is coming to the St. Croix ArtBarn in Osceola (1040 Oak Ridge Drive) on Monday, September 12, beginning at 7 p.m. An interactive audience discussion based on the issues raised by the play will take place after the performance. Tickets are $5. For more information on the play or to make reservations, contact the Land Stewardship Project (LSP) office in Lewiston, Minn., at 507-523-3366 or stettler@landstewardshipproject.org.

Look Who’s Knockin’ grapples with the questions of land ethics and the moral dilemma posed by wanting to get top dollar for selling one’s land while desiring to help the next generation of farmers get started farming. At the center of the play are “Nettie and Gerald,” long-time conservation farmers. Should they let their farm go for top dollar to the largest farmer in the county, or should they help out a young farm couple that is interested in starting a dairy?

The play and the discussion that follows will raise the question of “Who will farm the land in the next generation?” Produced by the Land Stewardship Project, the play is written by LSP’s Doug Nopar and directed by southeast Minnesota theater artist and farmer Eva Barr.

Founded in 1982, LSP (www.landstewardshipproject.org) is a Minnesota-based nonprofit membership organization. LSP aims to advance an agriculture that is socially just as well as environmentally and economically sustiainable for family-sized farms and rural communities.
